The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.
Zephaniah 3:17

Hi everyone
I do hope you're feeling safe and well going into our sixth week of lockdown. Thank you from all the staff team for all your words of encouragement for what we have been doing, we really appreciate it.
 I thought I would just keep you all up to date as to where things are at.
The building remains closed as per government restrictions, as do outside gatherings, so we can’t use the grounds either for worship or serving refreshments. Shame…. we are thinking through possibilities for outdoor worship and outdoor seating for the time when there is an easing of restrictions. Let’s see what Boris says this week!
Our new Lay Pastor Dylan remains locked down in Malaysia, but Joff and I have been in regular touch and he is still keen as mustard!  We are targetting June 15th for him and his wife Jani to arrive with us, but that is aspirational only….lets see what the rules say later in May. They will probably have a quarantine period anyway.  They could do with somewhere to stay for a few weeks (2-4?) for them to find a longer term home. If there are any offers that would be really cool.  Let me know please.
Joff and Abi have been furloughed which sounds bad, but is ok really. They are still being paid at the same rate and at the same time. They are doing voluntary work and training during their time off as per the govt rules, and we have made our first claim for the govt funds available. This system will run until June/July.  We may need to think again then…but things should be looking very different and freer by then.  We are also applying for other govt monies/grant  to offset our tremendous loss of revenue over Easter, buy we are not looking to take out any govt loans.
Lucas continues in his role, with help from several volunteers serving our teens with a very effective online ministry…they also have had to adjust very quickly.
The whole team have been undergoing/delivering a lot of training in this time, especially safeguarding, finance systems and new online comms skills. We have not been watching Netflix (well, a bit…)
Joff is gearing up for the final part of his degree, so think of him as he comes to a crucial moment in his life in the middle of the greatest social dislocation we have ever known.
We still rely upon people’s giving to support what we do and although our DD givers remain faithful and there is no imminent crisis, we have obviously received no cash offerings for 7 weeks. So if you are a regular giver we are relying on you to be saving up those gifts to carry us through this Red Sea moment to get us to the other side.
There are many other concerns amongst us, I know of some, but not all. I cannot be sure of the easing of restrictions or sure of many plans for the future just yet… but I am sure of the one we honour and serve. He has never let down those that love and listen.  In a world that has been very short of both loving and listening,  the lockdown gives us plenty of time to do both… it could be the greatest opportunity we have ever had to love more, and listen more.
Can’t wait to see you all face-to-face again!

Sarah Y sent in this lovely poem...

Jesus of the Scars
by Edward Shillito

If we have never sought, we seek Thee now;
Thine eyes burn through the dark, our only stars;
We must have sight of thorn-pricks on Thy brow,
We must have Thee, O Jesus of the Scars.

The heavens frighten us; they are too calm;
In all the universe we have no place.
Our wounds are hurting us; where is the balm?
Lord Jesus, by Thy Scars, we claim Thy grace.

If, when the doors are shut, Thou drawest near,
Only reveal those hands, that side of Thine;
We know to-day what wounds are, have no fear,
Show us Thy Scars, we know the countersign.

The other gods were strong; but Thou wast weak;
They rode, but Thou didst stumble to a throne;
But to our wounds only God’s wounds can speak,
And not a god has wounds, but Thou alone.
